Meeting with Mrs Dalloz, female member of French parliament

The French Erasmus + group meets Mrs Dalloz, female member of French parliament

On Monday, 28th of May, the students of the Erasmus + group of Paul Emile Victor Highschool met Mrs Marie-Christine Dalloz, as part of their research work on gender equality in politics.

Mrs. Dalloz spoke to students about the evolution of women's involvement in politics in the past years. She underlined the importance of the law on parity in politics set up in the year 2000. Before this law, there were few women in politics because they did not dare to stand for elections. And some citizens took a dim view of women in politics, considering they were not as competent as men ... Since this law, political parties are obliged to present as many women as men on their list. If not, they take the risk of being fined. However, Mrs. Dalloz explained that setting up parity can sometimes raise moral issues : indeed, it is difficult to ask an elected man who has worked well to accept to be replaced by a woman, just because she is a woman...

Mrs. Dalloz also told about her start in politics. It was difficult to be listened to by men, the women's speeches having less effect than men's. At the French National Assembly, each deputy is part of a commission. Mrs Dalloz belongs to the Commission of finances. In each commission a spokesperson is in charge of reporting everything that is said. When Mrs. Dalloz started, the spokesman, who was a man, went on sick leave. She had the opportunity to be his substitute and proved that she had the skills to be a spokesperson.

Mrs Dalloz concluded that a woman who enters politics must prove she is competent enough: she has no right to fail! In order to be listened to, she needs to have more arguments than her male colleagues !
Finally, Mrs Dalloz strongly encouraged girls to push themselves forward . She advised them to stand out not with their physical appearance or clothes but with their intelligence, their ideas, their ability to argue and convince men.
